Educational Therapy

A young person between the ages of 6 and 18 can spend over one–third of their day in school and school related activities.  For an atypical learner, that can mean over eight hours a day of feeling less than adequate.  Clearly, this can lead to both academic and emotional challenges.  My role is to work with the young person and their family, as well as teachers and school psychologists, to employ a team approach to addressing these academic and emotional issues.

I do this by gaining a deep understanding of the young person’s learning style and then teaching them how to learn:  One, with significant expertise in assessment, I have a comprehensive understanding of educational reports.  Two, I know how to ask the right questions of the young person, family members and school officials.  Three, I use the information to work with all involved to ensure that the young person has the skills to learn what he or she needs to learn.  Basically, by facilitating communication and acting as a liaison between home and school, I ensure the young person knows, “It’s not that you don’t understand.  It’s that you haven’t been taught the way you learn…" and we’re going to turn that around.
